In a time of growing environmental concern and a push away from tourism in mass-populated areas, Majorca showcased its journey towards a more sustainable future at WTM Virtual.
In recently joining the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the Majorca government highlighted their priority in placing the island at the forefront of the sustainable and safe management of popular tourist destinations.
The Majorcan Tourism Foundation is also processing the island's application for a Sustainable Tourism Observatory (STO), which promotes the active monitoring of the global impact of tourism - it will be the second destination in Spain to be granted an STO and 31st in the world.
The Majorcan Tourism Foundation has highlighted the island's natural destinations in support of sustainable tourism, notably: the Serra of Tramuntana National Park; a UNESCO Heritage Site of over 60,000 hectares; the Torrent of Palais Natural Monument; a karst canyon of over three kilometres and walls reaching 200 metres; the Sa Dragonera National Park; a landscape in the shape of a sleeping dragon, which is home to an extensive marine reserve; and, the S'Albufereta Natural Reserve with over 200 hectares of canals, lagoons, and streams and beaches. These locations will play a key role in Majorca's push towards a more sustainable tourist landscape, post-pandemic.
