WTM Virtual: Ibiza sees rise in biking and hiking

Cycling and hiking have been more popular than ever in Ibiza this year.

With the clubs closed and the island placed on the UK quarantine list, summer tourism expectedly took a hit in 2020, but for those who did arrive for sun, sea and sand instead turned to exploring the island's coastline and enjoying a quieter pace of life than might be expected from an Ibiza getaway.

As slow travel and being outdoors emerge as post-pandemic travel trends, Ibiza has a chance to thrive in a new market by making the most of its natural landscapes, a more than suitable backdrop for a steadier pace of holidaying.

Family business Walking Ibiza has been organising challenges to cover the entire coastline in four days while biking, walking and kayaking - beginning at the Ibiza Old Town and covering the island's lesser-explored caves, cliffs and bays.

The Destination Promoter, Diana Riera, said the north of the island had trails into the forests while the east offered incredible coastline walks and that across Ibiza there were pathways that led to hidden landscapes - allowing for a varied holiday for those looking for a range of more tranquil excursions while on the island.

Speaking at the WTM Virtual in London, Riera added that going off the beaten track could become more popular, explaining:

?People were cycling and hiking more than ever. They are interested in being outdoors and enjoying our nature and wildlife. What?s really fun is that afterwards you can jump into the sea for a swim. It?s really beautiful, the water is warm and it?s refreshing.?
