WTM 2021: Palma prepares for a sustainable future

Jos? Hila, mayor of Palma de Mallorca, gave a rundown on what to expect in the destinations coming months.

After a late restart to tourism, welcoming guests back from July 2021, Palma de Mallorca is eyeing a cautious return to 'normality', and taking the opportunity to build a greener future.

The destination's mayor, Jos? Hila, said: "Our aim is to be sustainable, and focus on safety over numbers."

"We're aiming for fewer arrivals, and putting a cap on daily admissions to the destination, whilst maintaining the authentic Palma de Mallorca that people know and love. Currently, for example, 15,000 passengers can arrive by cruise every day."

Committing to sustainability, the destination is aiming to improve water quality at the beach, implementing new water treatments that were previously unavailable.

On the destination's digital development triggered by Covid-19, Hila continued: "We focused on passengers that arrived via cruises- working alongside cruise companies to ensure passengers were a QR scan away from seeing the most crowded areas, what was going on in the city, and a direct port of call to recommend less crowded routes."

"We are, right now, developing 'Welcome Palma', an app that we hope to complete by September 2022. During the pandemic, we built a beach app, showing in real time how crowded each beach was."

Digital welcome packs and maps were also made available throughout the pandemic- these will continue to be updated moving forward.
