WTM 2021: LATA announces 2022 as the year of biodiversity

The Latin American Travel Association (LATA) announces 2022 as the year for biodiversity, a year-long campaign celebrating Latin America?s rich biodiversity and the value of protecting it.

Working with ministers, LATA members, NGOs and the wider travel industry, the Latin American travel and tourism sector is looking to end unsustainable practices, lessen climate change, and safeguard the region?s huge biodiversity and natural assets.

Colin Stewart, chairman of LATA comments: ?Sustainability has long been a focus for the Latin American travel community, and this was cemented with the introduction of LATA?s Sustainability Charter five years ago. I hope that this campaign will not only aid recovery following the devastating impact of the pandemic but will also highlight some of the fantastic work our members are doing as well as working towards the 30x30 global target. By working together as a community ? government ministers, partners across Latin America, and the UK travel industry ? our voice will be stronger, and we will see real change and progress made.?

In partnership with ANIMONDIAL, the LATA community, stakeholder working groups, travel businesses and other stakeholders, the LATA initiative will:

-  Minimise activity that negatively impacts animals and nature

-  Support and invest in better protection of wildlife and ecosystems

-  Provide greater opportunity for people to responsibly connect with nature

-  Secure the commitment of national governments to prioritise nature protection

-  Inspire and empower local guardianship to help prevent the decline of native species and restore lost habitats.

LATA, through its Sustainability Charter, will aim to mobilise the broad spectrum of travel and tourism stakeholders in Latin America to better protect the nature and biodiversity of the region.
