Sri Lanka Tourism is preparing to welcome guests from August 1

Sri Lanka is preparing to welcome travellers from across the world from August 1, with upgraded safety guidelines and precautionary measures in place

The island country has been able to contain the spread of the virus effectively, with no active community clusters in the last 30 days, and will be accepting tourists from all nationalities, regardless of group size.

Those booking tours should note that international visitors can enter the country borders through Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Colombo Ratmalana Airport (RMA) or Mattala Rajapaksa Hambantota Airport (MRIA) from August 1. Currently, the country does not require quarantine for passengers who test negative on the PCR test, before and after arrival. Airport authorities will carry out the test for free on arrival. Another test will be carried out after four or five days and a third one, after 10 days, if the stay is longer. At present, it takes 24 hours to receive the test results, but the state authorities are working on a speedier method to receive test results, within 4-6 hours by August. At present, it requires 24 hours for test results so visitors will be able to select a hotel for a one-night stay from certified four star or five-star hotels in Colombo or Negombo.

Those who test positive will be required to self-isolate in a designated hotel for 14 or 21 days. Hospitalisation will be required, if symptoms are detected.

All travellers will require a valid visa, issued for 30 days and extendable for up to 6 months after arrival. Online visas are available at http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/

A visa can be availed by paying a fee of US$100 and furnishing essential information, which includes, showing proof of a certified accommodation, an itinerary in Sri Lanka, a return ticket and a proof of medical insurance. Further relaxation for long stay will be considered, which will allow tourists to enjoy a five-year multiple entry visa, with a maximum of six months stay.
