Innsbruck is gearing up to host the start of one of the most well known amateur road cycle stage races in Europe this summer.
Approximately 1,000 competitors from more than 30 different countries will head to the capital of the Alps to take part in Stage 1 of Tour Transalp next month.
The race ? comprising seven one-day stages ? will take riders on a journey through 800 kilometres and 18,000 vertical metres of unique routes and alpine crossings.
Stage 1 will see competitors leave Innsbruck via the Brenner Pass to the banks of the Eisack in Brixen ? with a total of 90 kilometres and an altitude difference of up to 1,174 metres.
In the following six stages, riders will cycle through another 18 mountain passes and for the first time in the competition?s history, the Penser Joch, Gavia Pass, Umbrail Pass and the Bernina Pass await competitors, before they reach the finishing line at Lake Garda.
Peter Unsinn, head of market management for Innsbruck Tourism, said: ?Tour Transalp comes only eight months after we hosted the 2018 UCI Road World Championships, so Innsbruck couldn?t be more prepared to be the starting point for the race. It will be a fantastic event to witness and Innsbruck has everything to offer spectators who are looking for a pedal-powered break, with the city and its surrounding villages and valleys boasting 350 km of bicycle paths suitable for families, sports enthusiasts and leisurely cyclists. This is the first time that we?ve hosted Tour Transalp and we?re really excited about it.?
Tour Transalp is taking place from June 23 to June 29. There are direct flights to Innsbruck from major UK airports, with the city centre just minutes away.
