Life as a Trafalgar Travel Director on safari

A 4x4 driving through the Serengeti.

Shai Mkhulungu is a Travel Director who guides Trafalgar guests on safari in South Africa. Travel Bulletin heard from Shai on what a day on the plains looks like, and why Trafalgar maintains a unique appeal to travellers almost 80 years on from its founding

A day in the life

While guests' itineraries are built around bucket list game hunts or once-in-a-lifetime stargazing experiences, Shai's is structured around building unique relationships with Trafalgar guests and, as he says, "establish[ing] a positive atmosphere with humour and a sense of harmony."

"Preparations as a Travel Director begin prior to meeting the clients for the first time at the welcome dinner. Clients arrive in the city, some independently and others with arranged transport, often unaware of what to expect and who will be responsible for their care. I ensure an early arrival at the hotel, with a clear Trafalgar signboard, and am ready to establish a positive atmosphere with humour and a sense of harmony from the start of their experience.

"On the first day, I make it a priority to memorise each client’s name, as well as the names of their travel companions, family members or partners, and I take the time to understand everyone’s expectations. Once this is accomplished, I tailor my approach to address the group, individuals, and families accordingly. This personalised attention fosters an appreciation that exceeds expectations in ways one might not anticipate.

"After day one and establishing a connection with the group, it is then about guiding guests through the itinerary and sharing local insights, ensuring they get the most out of their Trafalgar trip and walk away with incredible memories."

What sold Shai on a life on safari?

"At a time when I was uncertain about both myself and the career I wanted to pursue, I had the opportunity to work with an international exchange student program during my high school years. One of the key requirements was to be a proud South African, willing to share the history and beauty of my country. I embraced this responsibility with enthusiasm and dedication. During our free days, I took the initiative to propose activities such as hiking and volunteering—spending time with those in need, visiting preschools, and engaging in community food gardening projects.

"I was uncertain about both myself and the career I wanted to pursue... although I wasn't initially certain, I decided to give [a career in tourism] a try."

"One day, my teacher advised me to consider pursuing a career in tourism. Although I wasn't initially certain, I decided to give it a try. This decision opened doors for me to travel extensively across Southern Africa, broadening my horizons and shaping my future career path."

The Trafalgar touch

Over a decade's worth of experience since his teacher's recommendation to consider tourism as a career has shown Shai what separates the good from the great in the world of travel. Discussing the unique spirit of Trafalgar guests, he said, "Most Trafalgar groups are family-oriented and fully understand the responsibilities of the tour director. At times, it feels as though they have been travelling together for years, given their mutual understanding and strong sense of camaraderie.

"Trafalgar tours also stand out because of how they connect with local communities, support environmental projects, and get involved in social initiatives. We focus on responsible travel, and our groups genuinely respect and engage with the places we visit."

Trafalgar's safari range includes the 'Essence of South Africa' itinerary, a 10-day adventure through the nation with departures throughout 2025 and 2026. Departures, excluding flights, lead in from £3,595 per person. The brand will debut river cruises in Europe from spring 2026.
