Tipping culture confuses British holidaymakers

Agents can help their clients overcome confusion in regard to tipping while on holiday by researching the customs of popular destinations.

A study of 500 British holidaymakers, commissioned by the DCC Forum, found that 58% of respondents do not research local tipping customs before going on holiday, 51% tip in the same way they do at home regardless of their holiday destination, and 48% only tip so they do not cause offence.

In line with the global rise in card transactions, 49% said they are tending to tip less during their holidays because they are using credit and debit cards more, and 37% of UK holidaymakers don?t tip on an all-inclusive holiday.

Gino Ravaioli, chairman of the DCC Forum, commented: ?Evidently, holidaymakers are anxious when it comes to tipping abroad and some are keen to avoid the issue altogether.

While it can seem confusing to apply another country?s customs, the value of doing research beforehand is priceless. To avoid unnecessary confusion or embarrassment, holidaymakers should take positive steps to understand their payment options abroad, something that will improve their purchasing experience while away.?
