One island is never enough: PATA discusses island-hopping opportunities

PATA UK & Ireland spokesperson Alison Haining spoke to Travel Bulletin about how multi-island journeys set French Polynesia apart from any other destination

"What I love most about the Islands of Tahiti in the south Pacific, an iconic destination within the Pacific Asia travel region, is the incredible variety and natural beauty you find across each island. While Bora Bora rightly gets a lot of attention, Moorea is full of adventure and charm. I highly recommend a yacht charter through the lagoons of Taha’a and Raiatea, it’s a truly special and peaceful experience.

While the Maldives may be known for its crystal-clear waters and luxurious overwater villas, French Polynesia offers something more. Here, the landscapes are dramatic, the culture is vibrant, and each island has a personality of its own. Travelling this far is rarely a one-stop trip.

My selling tip: Position this as a multi-island journey, not a single-stay holiday, this is what sets it apart.

Tahiti
All international flights arrive into Tahiti, making it the natural starting point. While it is more developed, it is also full of local colour. Spend a day or two exploring waterfalls, browsing the markets, or visiting Teahupo’o, one of the world’s most famous surf breaks. Then move on to the quieter islands for a deeper sense of escape.

My selling tip: Always recommend one-two nights here at the start or end, it adds depth and avoids tight connections.

Moorea
Just a short ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea offers dramatic peaks, lush green valleys, and a spirit of adventure. Unlike Bora Bora, you arrive by road, adding to its easy-going feel. Popular activities include 4x4 tours to Magic Mountain and exploring the pineapple plantations. The island has a rugged beauty that invites exploration.

My selling tip: Pair with Tahiti first, it’s an easy, high-impact start (flight or ferry).

Raiatea and  Taha’a
These quieter islands share a peaceful lagoon, ideal for chartering a private yacht or simply relaxing in nature. Visit a pearl farm, snorkel in clear waters, or wander through vanilla plantations. Raiatea holds deep cultural significance and is often considered the heart of Polynesian history and tradition.

My selling tip: Recommend a yacht charter and hotel stay combo here for a standout, exclusive experience.

Bora Bora
Often called the most romantic island in the world, Bora Bora is everything you dream of. Overwater bungalows stretch across a dazzling lagoon, with the majestic Mount Otemanu rising in the background. Arriving by speedboat sets the tone for an experience that feels cinematic. This is a place to slow down, soak up the views, and feel completely removed from the everyday.

My selling tip: Save for last as it delivers the ultimate grand finale.

Tetiaroa
Once the private sanctuary of Marlon Brando, Tetiaroa is now home to one of the world’s most exclusive eco-resorts, The Brando. Accessible only by private flight, this atoll offers complete seclusion and barefoot luxury. Expect turtle nesting grounds, untouched beaches, and a strong commitment to sustainability.

My selling tip: Position as an upgrade add-on for privacy and exclusivity.

French Polynesia isn’t a replacement for the Maldives, it’s what comes next. My last selling tip: Target clients with a “where next?” mindset, those wanting more than just a beach stay."
