Intrepid Travel has released its annual ‘Not Hot List’, spotlighting lesser-known destinations that are keen to take in more tourists
Locations on the 2027 List include Samburu National Reserve in Kenya, the highland Georgian townlet of Mestia, the Northern Highlands of Jordan, and the quiet Greek island of Alonnisos.
Destinations are picked based on the criteria that they are less-visited, they demonstrate tourism readiness, and have new initiatives, connectivity, major events, launches, or infrastructure developments that give travellers a compelling reason to visit.
Other locations on the list include Whitehorse in Canada, the Timorese capital of Dili, the Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka, the Baltic beach destination of Liepāja in Latvia, Carretera Austral in Chile, and the Swedish province of Dalsland.
Erica Kritikides, General Manager of experiences at Intrepid Travel, said, “If we want tourism to continue to be a force for good, we need to constantly rethink how and where we travel.
“The Not Hot List isn’t just about surfacing lesser-known places, it aims to shift the conversation and help travellers to discover new destinations where their visit can make a meaningful contribution to local communities and economies.”
Starting in 2018, the ‘Not Hot List’ is developed using insights from Intrepid’s network of local leaders and destination experts across 35 countries.
It aims to shine a light on places less-visited than their regional counterparts, where the impact of travellers can have a positive impact.
