Beyond the bucket list: the future of Far East travel lies beyond the icons

Hays Travel agent Di Victory explains the value of first-hand experience, cultural understanding, and specialist knowledge when selling the Far East to clients

"The Far East has never been more desirable. Japan, in particular, continues to capture travellers’ imaginations, but my recent educational visit reinforced that our role as travel professionals is no longer simply helping clients see the highlights. It is about helping them experience destinations in a way that is authentic, respectful and sustainable.

Japan is a perfect example of how travel is evolving. While first time visitors naturally want to see Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, I discovered that some of the most rewarding experiences happened away from the obvious hotspots.

Staying in a traditional ryokan in Kinosaki Onsen, exploring the historic town of Inuyama and experiencing a private tea ceremony with a Maiko offered a deeper understanding of Japanese culture than any ‘bucket list attraction’ could provide.

The trip also highlighted the impact of overtourism, reinforcing why we have a responsibility to encourage clients to explore differently. Working with destination specialists such as InsideJapan allowed me to discover quieter neighbourhoods, lesser visited regions and cultural encounters that created a more authentic connection with Japan.

The value of experience

Perhaps my biggest takeaway was that the Far East rewards preparation. Cultural understanding is just as important as choosing the right hotel. From onsen etiquette and dining customs to respecting local communities and traditions, these details can transform a holiday from simply visiting a country to truly experiencing it.

The experience inspired me to create a practical “Top Tips for Visiting Japan” guide for my clients, which is now being shared by fellow Designer Travel colleagues to help travellers arrive informed, confident and respectful.

Even as an experienced traveller, I learnt things no webinar, brochure or social media reel could have taught me. That is the value of firsthand experience and why specialist knowledge matters.

As demand for the Far East continues to grow, our influence as travel professionals has never been greater. We have the opportunity to shape not only where clients travel, but how and when they experience a destination, encouraging journeys beyond the obvious. Ultimately, that is where travel expertise has its greatest impact, not simply in creating memorable holidays, but in protecting the destinations we all love to sell."
