An industry of adaptability and resilience

Julia Lo Bue-Said during her keynote speech at the Advantage Travel Partnership Conference

The travel industry has shown exceptional resilience and adaptability over the last few turbulent years according to Julia Lo Bue-Said in her keynote speech during the Advantage Travel Partnership conference today, with the UK outbound market leading the way in consumer spending

Taking to the stage at the Hilton Malta today to kick-start the Advantage Travel Partnership Conference, Julia reflected on the past year and the pivotal period it posed for the UK outbound travel industry: “Despite ongoing challenges, including global political uncertainty, operational disruptions such as air traffic control strikes, extreme weather events and cost-of-living pressures, the industry demonstrated exceptional resilience and adaptability, and UK outbound travel led the way in consumer spending, outperforming many other service sectors.”

However, the introduction of the UK Government’s Electronic Travel visa requirement for non-visa holders could cause a huge impact to the UK’s international competitiveness.

Expanding footprints

As for the consortium itself, the last year witnessed expansion on all fronts with a further £550 million of turnover growth and the addition of more than 50 new branches to the network.

“During the year our members continued to thrive, with many expanding into new locations and sectors, and driving growth in a positive trading environment. The resilience of our membership base was also exemplified by numerous milestone anniversaries […] achievements that underscore the enduring value and adaptability of travel agents in an ever-changing marketplace – and choosing Advantage as their Partner of choice.”

Looking into the now and beyond

In the current travel sphere, Julia highlighted how “all signs point to a strong lates market” in regards to mass market holiday sales as “value continues to be king”, especially as the definition of ‘value’ is now led by experience and quality rather than the price.

Summer sun destinations are to remain popular according to Julia, with “significant growth in Turkiye, Egypt and Tunisia for their values and all-inclusive options.” Long-haul travel is also growing, with interest continuing to build in Thailand and Japan.

Looking ahead to the feature, Julia said the key trends to shape the industry moving forward are the following:
• AI and automation
• Sustainable tourism
• The influence of trade patterns and investment decisions impacting travel infrastructure
• Adaptability created towards new market opportunities for travel

Agents in the spotlight

In her closing remarks, Julia paid homage to travel agents, stating how Advantage positions its members as authoritative voices within the sector.

“We spotlight how agent expertise delivers professional service, robust consumer safeguards, diverse options and exceptional value in ways that transcend what technology alone can provide. In today's intricate travel landscape, our ambition remains steadfast to champion travel agents and travel management companies as trusted authorities in their field.”

The Advantage Travel Partnership Conference is taking place May 13th-16th, 2025, at the Hilton Malta.
