WTM 2022: UK the fifth biggest source market to Quito

The UK is the fifth biggest market to the Ecuadorian capital of Quito and the tourism board is keen to increase that number for 2023, said Ricardo Ruben Lara Salazar from Quito Tourism.

The city has welcomed 500,000 visitors from all over the world this year so far and the tourist board is looking to ramp up these numbers from the UK next year with some digital campaigns and press trips.

Speaking to Travel Bulletin at WTM, Salazar explained: “Quito’s location on the middle of the equator makes it a popular destination and The Middle of the World monument just outside Quito is the main tourist attraction for the city. People can take a picture with one foot on either side of the line that marks the divide between the hemispheres.

“The city’s history, culture, architecture, monuments, churches, our many museums, gastronomy, the opportunity to enjoy cooking classes, or to sample agave, our Ecuadorian version of tequila, make Quito a great place to visit. Our nature and bird-watching opportunities are popular with the UK market.

“Also our location close to the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands make Quito a popular stepping-off point for other destinations too.”
