Travelling to Cambodia: rules and visas

Cambodia may have opened its borders, but strict rules and visa requirements for arriving travellers are still in place.

Cambodia continues a steady handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, with official figures reporting zero deaths from Covid-19 thus far and the number of infections remaining exceptionally low.

Strict rules and thorough lockdowns have helped navigate the country through the crisis. In light of their success so far, Cambodia has already opened its borders to foreign visitors from June 2020. Travellers with a valid Cambodian visa are allowed to enter the country once more, but strict conditions apply to ensure that the country retains its rigorous approach to Covid-19.

Cambodia kickstarts tourism

Cambodia was one of the first countries to invite foreign travel once more, even as the pandemic continued its impact across the world, as the government felt their handling of the virus had been successful enough to start re-opening their borders.

The country still has rules in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus; nightclubs, theatres, schools and fitness studios remain closed, but most shops, restaurants and beaches have reopened.

Strict conditions in Cambodia

Although it has been possible to travel to Cambodia for several months, the conditions for travel remain very strict. All travellers are required to pay a deposit of US$2,000 upon arrival, used to cover any costs realted to Coronavirus. All travellers must also carry a doctor's note confirming they have tested negative for the virus. This note must have been issued no more than 72 hours before the date of departure. Travel and health insurance is also required, covering damages of at least US$50,000. All travellers must provide proof of said insurance upon arrival.

Unlike other countries, Cambodia has kept its visa system in place; even recently opposing suggestions to reduce the visa prices. A Cambodian embassy visa is still required for entry. Electronic visas are not currently being issued.

Mandatory quarantine upon arrival

All visitors to Cambodia are required to spend 14 days in quarantine. Whether travellers are allowed to self-isolate or held in a designated state quarantine facility depends on whether any passengers on the same flight have tested positive. If all passengers test negative, they may spend 14 days in self-isolation. If any co-passengers test positive, all passengers must go into a designated quarantine facility. This can cost up to US$1,380, which must be covered by the travellers themselves. Passengers who themselves test positive will be taken to a hospital upon landing.

Electronic visas

Electronic Cambodian visas are not currently being issued by immigration authorities. Although the travel ban has lifted, the e-visa system is not yet operational. While a visa can, in theory, be applied for as normal, all applications are being put on hold. All pending applications won't be processed until the system begins operation again.

Airport visas, purchasable at Cambodian airports, are likewise not available yet. Travellers can only apply for an embassy visa at their national Cambodian embassy before departure. This is to ensure all safety precautions are being taken to minimise the risk of coronavirus.
