The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival to kick off this month

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival will kick off on February 19, bringing colour, delight and buzz to the capital?s streets until March 1.

Each year, people from all over the world come to experience this unforgettable carnival where the only concern is to have as much fun as possible.

This is the second most famous and popular carnival in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro and the most widely attended of all the carnivals held on the Canary Islands.

The Carnival of Tenerife has a theme every year that serves as inspiration for the parades and costumes. This year?s official theme is "The Coquette of the ?50s".

Back in the 1980's, the carnival was officially announced as a " Festival of International Tourist Interest" at the same time as it proudly entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1987 as the largest gathering of people (over 250,000) at an open-air plaza to attend a concert.

The Carnival includes two parts: the official carnival and the street carnival.

The official carnival has the participation of more than a hundred musical groups such as murgas, comparsas and rondallas, while the street carnival is less closely organised and involves people who celebrate on the streets, dressed in fancy dress, according to the carnival tradition.
