Roadtrip renaissance: why are over half of guests hitting the highway?

Research from Irish Ferries has uncovered that 58% of guests have a roadtrip planned this summer, but why are guests leading a roadtrip renaissance?

Why is a roadtrip such an attractive option?

According to the ferry operator's findings, the top reason for guests opting for the tarmac of the road rather than that of the runway is their ability to cram their car full of their belongings rather than adhere to luggage limitations on a flight or train – limitations that 12% of respondents described as 'seriously frustrating'.

52% of guests said they love the spontaneity afforded by a roadtrip; perhaps no surprise when over three quarters (77%) are keen to explore new towns and villages and two thirds (67%) have their sights set on trying local cuisines when on the road.

David O'Connor, Irish Ferries' head of holidays, largely echoed the survey's sentiments, "Road trips... add a whole new layer of freedom and simplicity. With many amazing road tripping destinations on our doorstep steeped in history, culture and natural beauty, hopping across the English Channel or the Irish Sea in your own car is simply the best way to travel without fuss."

Where are roadtrippers heading this summer?

Naturally, our nearest continental neighbours topped the list of where roadtrippers are heading: almost one in three (30%) have set the Satnav for France this summer. Ireland is in close second with 29% en route to the Emerald Isle.

Are flights a force of frustration?

Along with the 12% of guests describing luggage restrictions as 'seriously frustrating,' 22% of guests find airport delays tedious.

Waiting for security or baggage (18%) and cramped cabins (12%) were also listed as gripes.

O'Connor continued, noting the benefits of a ferry trip over flying, "From personal encounters with staff, discovering the best insider tips and tricks for the perfect trip, to the fun family-friendly offerings such as the restaurants and play areas – the holiday begins earlier when travelling by ferry."

Irish Ferries fares start from £144 each way for a car and driver to Ireland and £78 to France for a car and up to nine passengers.
