Research reveals Europe's top ski staples to surprising results

Winter sports insurance company SportsCover Direct has unveiled a look at the top ski destinations in Europe, measuring each on eight different metrics.

The insurance provider evaluated the total price of a day ski pass, average star rating, number of ski lifts, highest point of elevation, slope lengths, average hotel prices and number of hotels within a 10km radius to uncover the top spots for skiing.

Bulgaria's Aleko resort came up trumps, scoring 74.2 out of 80 (with all metrics marked out of 10), with 197 hotels nearby and day passes averaging out at £22.

Straja resort in Romania came close behind (72 out of 80), with ski passes from £22.27 on average and an elevation difference of 783 metres.

Ravna Planina in Bosnia and Herzegovina came in third, followed by Tornik–Zlatibor in Serbia and Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600, an adjoined resort in Montenegro, comprising the top five.
