P&O Cruises' Iona is named in Southampton

Britains largest and most eco-friendly cruiser, Iona, will take to the seas this summer.

P&O Cruises new cruise ship has been named the Iona, which is powered by liquefied natural guests, celebrated its launch as it arrived in its home port in Southampton.

The ship was named by Dame Irene Hays, chair of Hays Travel. The naming ceremony was broadcast to a virtual audience of 25,000, with a laser show and performance from Gary Barlow, the ship's musical director.

P&O Cruises' president, Paul Ludlow, celebrated the ceremony, saying: "It is 427 days since we have been able to do what we do best ? welcome our guests on board and give them unforgettable, joyous holidays where they make memories on board and see the sights of the world. With our invited audience and millions more watching the ceremony on social media, today heralds a new beginning and new hope for the cruise industry. Iona is indeed a very visible symbol of our future.?

Iona is home to 30 bars and restaurants, with a number of new specialty dining options, including tapas from Spanish chef Jos? Pizarro and a new Chef's Table menu from Marco Pierre White. On-board entertainment includes the "SkyDome", a glass structure which will serve as a relaxed poolside environment by day before being transformed into a night venue with DJs, a stage and aerial acrobatic shows.

The ship will also host, in a world first, an on-board gin still, created in association with Salcombe Gin.

Highlights and a full recap of the ceremony will be available online soon.
