Madeira tourism board to issue COVID-safe certification

Madeira Promotion Bureau (MPB) has approved a certification process for tourism businesses for good practice in relation to managing biological risks in association with COVID-19.

Business which can apply for certification include accommodation, restaurants, travel agencies, entertainment, transport, car rental and other official tourism establishments.

Next month, a webinar is planned for MPB members where the board will present the project and explain how to participate and how the certification process will work. In June, the certification manual will be released and it is expected that Madeira businesses will start receiving certifications in July, with a proposed capacity to certify 150-160 businesses per month,

Eduardo Jesus, regional secretary for tourism and culture and president of the bureau commented: ?The top priority is to overcome the fear of travelling and regain the traveller's confidence. The implementation of these measures will provide comfort to those who travel and it is ultimately for the well-being of all. The decision to start the certification of the destination is to ensure we are upholding and guaranteeing our island?s offering, as a safe tourism location for our visitors. Madeira has been a tourism destination for more than two hundred years and has been an active partner in the emergence of therapeutic tourism. We are convinced that, in this way, we can contribute objectively, in the appropriate manner to support the recovery of the sector, with the strength and dynamism that we all want?.
