How social media is influencing travel

The birth of social media has turned travel into an online experience, with more and more holidaymakers showing off their #ootd with a #seasideselfie.

Speaking of her holiday preferences at the opening plenary session, keynote speaker Sarah Smith openly discussed her disdain for the social media traveller, proclaiming that she doesn?t let Instagram influence where she visits on holiday.

?I find the experience of looking at everything as you travel through the lens of your mobile phone instead of actually experiencing the moment really quite boring, and I don?t know whether people ever look back at these endless pictures they take,? she explained.

On the topic, the BBC Scotland editor continued: ?I personally don?t travel for the ?Gram, but maybe that just shows I?m the wrong demographic.?

However, it?s safe to say this opinion isn?t held by many prospective tourists, as explained by WIN Global Travel Network?s international development manager Kirsty Chambers during a discussion on millennials in the travel industry. ?Instagram does play a big role for people our age,? she began.

?There are a lot of influencers on there and it does influence the way we book a holiday.?
