Hong Kong looks to reinvigorate tourism after lockdown

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced plans for recovery once COVID-19-related travel restrictions are lifted.

Dane Cheng, the board's executive director, has announced a three-phase plan to complement the ?41.8 million in funds allocated to supporting promotions by the travel trade in Hong Kong.

Phase one is underway at the moment with HKTB preparing a recovery plan. When the pandemic shows signs of abating, phase 2, the recovery phase, will come into action. This will initially focus on the local tourism market, encouraging Hong Kong residents to rediscover different neighbourhoods and community cultures, the aim being to restore the confidence of locals in their city. Additionally, phase 2 will include tactical promotions in selected overseas markets.

The third phase will be the relaunch phase. HKTB is planning large-scale events and a new tourism brand campaign to rebuild Hong Kong's image.

Dr YK Pang, HKTB's chairman said that the COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges for tourism in Hong Kong: ?The tourism landscape will be reshaped. In the post-pandemic world, we will see a shift in preference and behaviour among travellers ? the public health conditions of destinations, and the hygiene standards of transportations, hotels and other tourism facilities will become a top priority; people will prefer short-haul breaks and shorter itineraries; wellness-themed trips will become a new trend.

?It is in fact an ideal time for us to review and rethink Hong Kong?s position in the global tourism market and elevate service standard. Together with the travel trade, the HKTB is going to map out the long-term development strategy for our tourism industry,? Dr Pang concluded.
