Great Barrier Reef resort offers restoration and rehabilitation experience

Guests can care for injured turtles and assist with monitoring the Great Barrier Reef as part of the new citizen science programme.

Australia’s Fitzroy Island Resort is the first to offer guests a behind-the-scenes hands-on experience at the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC), where they will help care of the sea turtles before helping with the Reef Restoration Foundation’s coral restoration work.

The resort is considered a leader in the protection of coral reefs, and encourages guests to deepen their understanding of the importance of restoration and rehabilitation projects.

Travellers staying on the main land can also participate in the experience with the eco-certified Sunlover Reef Cruises. The full-day ‘Fitzroy Island Experience’ includes a 45-minute catamaran journey to the island, snorkelling equipment and a glass-bottomed boat tour with prices from US$129 per adult and US$79 per child.
