The carbon intesity of the cruise lines fleet is down 33.5% over the last 14 years, with World Europas status as the worlds largest LNG-powered cruise ship bolstering MSCs eco credentials.
MSC Cruises revealed details of its sustainability commitments and strategy in its 2022 Sustainability Report.
The strategy, informed by assessments carried out in 2019 and 2021, ensures the cruise line focuses on the most significant issues and impacts. The resulting Sustainability Action Plan, comprised of six priority workstreams, is informed by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Linden Coppell, MSC Cruises’ Sustainability vice president, explained: "To ensure the appropriateness and continued relevance of our Sustainability Strategy and our Sustainability Action Plan, we are in ongoing dialogue with our employees, guests, and key external stakeholders.
"Through this listening exercise, we can ensure that our current focus areas are appropriate and identify any new areas as they arise – while we closely monitor the progress on the six key pillars of our action plan."
The plan features an aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, with MSC World Europa's debut as the world's largest LNG-powered ship in 2022 marking a key milestone in that journey.
MSC has also emphasised the need to develop sustainable cruise terminals to build jobs and bring new guests to its destinations.
