East Midlands Airport (EMA) has continued to operate more than half of its scheduled flights, more than any other major European airport.
More ad hoc flights have come into the airport as it takes on additional capacity from other airports that are now closed at night, together with a reduction in long-haul passenger flights from other UK airports, with luggage still being sent to EMA.
While passenger flights have now been suspended, EMA is playing a role in supporting the economy through its logistics operations.
Cargo flights have increased by 7.4% across the two weeks leading up to March 29, with the airport taking in cargo planes with urgent medical and PPE equipment and deliveries from overseas stockists thanks to an increase in people shopping online. As the airport is only a four-hour truck drove to 90% of the population of England and Wales, it has been able to take in vital supplies so they can be quickly delivered to those who need them urgently, such as hospital, shops and to people who are isolated at home.
