Cunard curveball: line names unconventional godparent of Queen Anne

The star-studded naming ceremony saw pop and sports stars gather at Cunard's spiritual home in Liverpool.

184 years have passed since Cunard's first transatlantic crossing departed from Liverpool, but the cruise line's love for the city still remains: tens of thousands of people gathered to watch the naming ceremony, where the City of Liverpool was named as the Queen Anne's godparent.

Cunard's president, Katie McAllister, said, "“Liverpool is the spiritual home of Cunard, and we are therefore delighted and feel it very fitting that the City of Liverpool is the godparent to Queen Anne.

"It’s testament to the enduring relationship that connects Cunard and the city in which it was founded to the present day when we officially named our new ship on the Liverpool Waterfront, in front of the Cunard Building."

Mel C, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Ngunan Adamu and Andrea Bocelli led a celebrity lineup of guests, hosted by Matt and Emma Willis.
