Balearic Islands strengthens its position as a safe tourist destination

The government of Balearic Islands has reinforced its position as a safe tourist destination after it presented a better data than other territories during this epidemic.

In the last seven days, the archipelago has registered a contagion rate of 1.48 cases per 100 inhabitants. This figure is more than three times lower than that the whole of Spain (5.3) and below the rate of its main tourism source markets.

The government has just approved measures to reinforce security at the destination even further and extend protection to residents and visitors, including the widespread use of face masks in all those places where it is not possible to maintain a safe distance. The objective is to contribute to achieving a balanced situation that allows protecting both visitors and residents, while restarting tourist activity, essential for the economic revival of the archipelago.

The government aspires to guarantee all citizens and visitors maximum protection and security in a situation of increased mobility and the density of people in public spaces. For this reason, the government of the Balearic Islands has decided to establish the mandatory use of face masks in open or closed places for public use.

However, the rule does include several exceptions. It will not be compulsory to wear a mask in situations of consumption of food and beverages, nor during the practice of physical activity, water activities or the use of wind musical instruments. Those under 16 years of age are also exempt while participating in their usual activities with their existing bubble and it is not mandatory to use a mask in natural spaces or outdoors outside the population centres; on the beaches and on the promenades. The use of a mask for people older than six years old is mandatory in hotels and public areas such as lobbies, corridors and elevators.

This measure has proved to be very effective in fighting the spread of the virus and has obtained very positive results in other countries. In addition, other European tourist destinations have also established the mandatory use of a mask in outdoor and indoor spaces.
