A 'little bit of everything' goes a long way for Taiwan

Taiwan Tourism Administration’s director Linda Yu-Shan Lin thinks having “a little bit of everything” is the key to Taiwan’s success as holidays to Asia continue to dominate holidaymaker’s wish lists

Following the pandemic, the UK market’s appetite for Asian holidays has continued to skyrocket, and Linda thinks Taiwan’s unique position in offering a little bit of everything is key to the destination’s growing visitation numbers, boasting a 33% increase.

“We have seen a lot of visitor growth in the likes of Japan, Korea, and I think the travellers in UK are looking like a different destination to explore. That's why Taiwan has become the hidden gem for the British market and for the repeat traveller to Asia.

“Taiwan has a very good combination of cultural perspectives and nature landscape perspective, because it's like a little bit of China, a little bit of Korea and Japan, with a lot of cultural influences making up the small island.”

As part of the destination’s latest tourism strategy, sustainability is being placed front and centre, and Linda believes keeping things local and recycling education through communities is the way forward.

“From a community perspective, our government sponsor and provide lots of programmes to empower local association communities to have an education platform to encourage younger generations to go back to their hometown with their new perspective from learnings from other countries and other cities […] once the local community has their own experience, they can offer more to Taiwanese or international tourists.” linda taiwan

“Now, we like to encourage tour operator’s using local people when they are looking into entering the local community.”

Education doesn’t just stop with the locals, agents can also benefit from immersive learning through TTA’s educational programmes.

“Taiwan Tourism Administration provide educational seminars for agencies […] we are going to build a Taiwan tourism school online, and we will have lots of different educational programmes so once you finish all the sessions, we will have some incentive for the tour agency who complete all the courses.”
