The poll revealed that 56% would chose a secluded beach abroad for their dream honeymoon destination and fewer than 1% said they would opt for a staycation in Britain. A break in a European city, such as Paris, Prague or Barcelona, was first choice for 9% and the beach particularly appealed to women, with 61% choosing it as their ideal destination, compared with 51% of men.

However, the survey revealed that romance wasn't necessarily confined to the holiday destination - 11% of those polled felt that airports were romantic places, and 1% of men said they had had their best kiss there.

The company's head of commercial, Sean Hagger, said: "Your honeymoon should be the happiest, most relaxing holiday of your life, so it's natural that people want to spend it in a happy, relaxing place where they're guaranteed sunshine." Booking an airport hotel or an airport lounge is a great way to add to the romance and make the holiday even more special. Some of our hotels offer special packages for honeymoon couples, and we have Champagne packages at several of our lounges so people can toast that special moment." As examples, the honeymoon package at the Renaissance Hotel at Heathrow includes strawberries, chocolate and Champagne in the room, while at Gatwick, the Felbridge Hotel's luxury package includes an upgrade to an air-conditioned Club Room with Elemis toiletries, a mini-bar, flatscreen TV and a bottle of Champagne.
