The islands of Samoa in the South Pacific start a week long celebration today as the nation marks its 50th Anniversary of Independence.

To celebrate, Samoa Tourism Authority, hoteliers and participating UK operators are launching ?Mea?alofa Special*? offers to UK visitors to Samoa to experience the real South Pacific. The Samoa Tourism Authority is offering a ?200 shopping voucher to the UK travel agent making the most bookings to Samoa by 1 October 2012*.

In the Samoan language the word ?Mea?alofa? means ?gift? and some of Samoa?s hotels have 'giftwrapped' discounted prices so that Samoa can be booked as an extension for clients travelling to Australia or New Zealand ?between 1 October 2012 and 31 March 2013.

Samoa?s newest boutique resort, the Seabreeze Resort and neighbouring Sinalei Reef Resort are offering discounts on room nights. Hotels in the capital Apia such as the four-star Tanoa Tusitala and Samoan Outrigger are offering four nights for the price of three. Apia is a laid back picturesque town on the waterfront, home to historical monuments, markets and an enjoyable nightlife.

Close by is the Robert Louis Stevenson museum dedicated to the ?Treasure Island? author who spent the last four years of his life in Samoa. A day tour exploring the rest of Upolu island will showcase Samoa?s scenery and coastal villages.

For those with more time to explore Samoa?s islands, sister island Savaii across from the main island of Upolu has similar free night offers at the Le Lagoto Resort and nearby Savaii Lagoon Resort.

2012 is the year to ?Celebrate Samoa?, further?anniversary celebrations include an Independence Ball, cultural performances, a gospel concert, traditional fautasi regatta, arts and craft exhibitions and the International Tatau Festival.? Samoa has a deep and long standing connection with tattooing and the festival will commemorate the 2,000 year history of the craft.
