For example, in Montenegro, Kotor Valley is home to spectacular mountain scenery. Amid reminders of the region?s medieval Venetian rule, visitors can enjoy snorkelling, white-water rafting, kayaking, orienteering and hiking, with instruction and supervision provided.
Bulgaria?s Rila National Park offers outdoor activities in a region known for its biodiversity. There are horse-riding trails, mountain-biking and jeep safaris through forests, canyons and waterfalls, plus sailing and wake-boarding at the Iskar Dam lake.
The equatorial jungles of Borneo provide unique backdrops for trekking, rafting, rainforest trips to the Gormantong caves, plus the chance to meet endangered species such as the pygmy elephant. Trips start and end in the coastal resort of Kota Kinabalu.
Peru offers an energetic tour taking in the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu, rainforests and arid desert beside the Pacific, with activities taking advantage of river canyons, mountains and Lake Titicaca.
Meanwhile, visitors to Ecuador can mountain-bike down volcanoes, experience white-water rafting and ride zip-wires through canyons. Scuba-diving and exploration of the Galapagos Islands are also available.
Closer to home, Fuerteventura is an ideal location to learn sea kayaking or surfing, and a week at El Cotillo includes instruction and equipment. Less developed than some Canary Islands, the area still provides a golf course and zoo, plus beaches around an unspoilt fishing village.
