ABTA launches a guide for safe travel during the post-lockdown transition phase

ABTA has published a post-pandemic recovery guide to provide a detailed plan of action for the suppliers of travel and tourism services, travel providers and destination governments; so that they can identify areas which need immediate modifications for travel operations to begin post-lockdown

ABTA will also be hosting a webinar titled ?Destination Health and Safety for Post Pandemic Recovery? on July 1, to discuss further details and insights from the guide. The webinar is free for ABTA Members and Partners, while non-members will need to pay a registration fee.

Developed by ABTA?s Destinations team and a range of external experts, the guide is not intended to replace the guidance of local health authority or government, but to complement the ABTA Tourism Accommodation Health and Safety Technical Guide and other ABTA publications and guidance. Users will be able to identify significant operational, service and safety procedures, such as customer journey, management responsibility, risk assessment, refinement of operational services, provisions and procedures, health, safety and security, communication, supply chain management and prevention of spread of infection, that should be considered and introduced in accordance with the local authorities and local public health requirements before restarting travel operations.

Angela Hills, ABTA?s head of destinations, says: ?For many years the ABTA Destinations team has worked with destination governments, local authorities, accommodation, transport and excursion providers, and other suppliers of tourist service, to support good health and safety management for our customers and workers in the tourism sector. As we collectively embark on the road to restarting travel, it is important that we continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, and instil confidence that people can travel safely again. Any changes to operations or safety practices, (as part of the recovery process), should be made in a balanced and proportionate way, with the primary focus on the safety and wellbeing of staff and customers, besides following the legislation and public health requirements of the destination concerned.?

?I would like to thank the team of international experts and health and safety consultancy companies like BeSafe Ltd, IGI Ltd, Intertek Cristal, Preverisk Group, Professor Rodney Cartwright and Travelife for Accommodation, who contributed to this guide. Their expertise has been invaluable,? she added.

The guide is available for free to all ABTA members in English and languages including Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.

Members who want to know more about the recovery plans that are being implemented in other countries, can look up the ?Country recovery plans? page in the Member zone on abta.com. The page hosts guidance documents from destination governments or their Tourism Associations, with details about their countries? specific recovery plans and health and hygiene initiatives.
