Hoda Lacey shows you how to take control of the wheel of life

A saying I like is: ?How you do anything is how you do everything?. Our life is a whole. We cannot expect to do well in one part of our lives if we are dissatisfied in another.

The wheel of life is a simple but highly effective tool that will help you focus on the eight key areas that determine the quality of your life. Draw a large circle on a sheet of paper and divide it into eight sections (detailed below), which will represent balance in your life.

Assess your satisfaction with each key area on a scale of one to ten. One represents ?couldn?t be worse? and ten represents ?couldn?t be better?. The centre of the wheel is one and the outer edge is ten. Rank your level of satisfaction with each life area by a point which signifies the number you have designated. You can then join the points at which you have ranked them by drawing a straight or curved line to create a new outer edge.

The new perimeter of the circle represents your personal Wheel of Life. How bumpy would the ride be if this were a real wheel? You can re-balance your wheel, regaining resilience, to enable you to face life?s many challenges. Ask yourself: If there is room for improvement, what will you do?

If life couldn?t be better, how will you maintain it? Your life balance comes from the synergy of these key pieces fitting. You cannot perform your best in one area if another is screaming for attention. Finances The past 18 months have been tough. Don?t duck the issue and hope it will pass you by. Start evaluating your financial situation, and make adjustments now. It?s easier than you imagine to regain control and make considerable savings. Some people may need a coach to help them initially. This could be the best investment you have ever made.

Job/Career If you don?t love what you do, and where you work, you will never be happy, no matter how much money you are making. It?s also unfair to your employers as you will not be giving them your best. You may think you are stuck in your job because you have a mortgage to pay or family commitments. You also believe that unemployment is rising and it?s difficult to find a decent job these days. But that?s a mindset and if you think you won?t find a better placement, then you definitely won?t. Consult a career counsellor, if necessary.

Environment Are you happy with your physical work or home environment? Are you where you want to be? What is your ideal environment? What can you do to improve matters? Even tiny changes can make a whole lot of difference.

Health and fitness It?s amazing how we always remember to MOT our car, but neglect our own bodies. If you are unfit or stressed, you will never be able to perform at your optimum level. You know what you need to do, so get on with it! Family & friends These are the true underpinnings of your life. If you were asked whether family or work were more important to you, you would invariably choose family. But in practice, you often give priority to your work issues. Sadly, it is often too late when you wake up to what you have missed.

Romance/Key relationships In your own heart you know the difference between family and friends and key relationships. We all need a soul mate. That special person in your life who lightens your day and cares for you unconditionally.

Fun & recreation When did you last really enjoy yourself? Are you taking life too seriously? Conversely, are you having so much fun that you are not taken seriously by others?

Personal growth We all have our unique gifts and talents - but don?t squander them. Make this your year of learning and development. Invest in your own growth so that you can become even better at what you do.

A wise person once said that the best thing you can do with your purse is empty it into your head. Now imagine your wheel turning smoothly. This year could be the start of making your dreams a reality but you need to sow in order to reap. It?s within your control! Hoda Lacey is a coach and is contactable for advice and guidance.
