WTM news: Tobago to harness responsible tourism as visitor numbers rise

At WTM, the Tobago Tourism Agency emphasised nature focused development that has been going on in the island.

As described by the tourism agency’s rebranded slogan: “untouched, unspoiled, undiscovered, Tobago”, current development have a particular focus on the eco-tourism initiatives of the island, as explained by the CEO of Tobago Tourism Agency, Louis E A Lewis:

“We’ll be focusing on the application for Blue Flag certification for two of our beaches, a Green Key certification to ensure environmental sustainability and environmental consciousness of our product, we are also talking about the unique features of Tobago, we are the only island in Caribbean that has such a wide variety bird species, Tobago might be the best place to see a rare species of birds in the world. We also have some unique species like 23 different snakes, and 7 frogs as an example. We co-exist with the natural environment and live in harmony with it,”

It seems the eco-focused, rebranding initiative proved to be a success, as 2019 saw a 14% increase in international visitors to Tobago.

One of the other immediate aims of the tourism agency is to further engage with agents and the trade in the near future, with plans to introduce more incentive programmes and several FAM trips in 2020: “Agents are important and so are incentive programmes, we want to promote more qualified agents selling Tobago. Travel agents are important in terms of recommendations, because they have direct interface with people who want to travel to Tobago," explained the CEO.
