WTM news: Zagreb tourism says Croatia is more than its beaches

There's more to see in Croatia than beaches, that’s the message from the Zagreb Tourist Board - also there are fam trips coming up for travel agents.

The Capital already has award-winning Christmas markets, then in January the country takes over the EU presidency and in March the city undergoes yet another transformation with the European Festival of Lights where light installations by famous artists are placed across the city.

The Zagreb Tourist Board said: “Zagreb is out of the ordinary. Once again it’s the best Christmas market in Europe - voted by the public. It combines the best of culture and tourism of the city. Our programme is not only skating and food and drinks - there are exhibitions, many museums are open, there are concerts in the open. The diversity of what we offer in the city is wide. It’s more than sausages and mulled wine.

“For the past five years our Christmas markets for the tourists have really boomed. There are many locations, we have an ice park and we stretch the markets across the city. Each year there’s something new.”

For Brits who typically fly to Croatia for sun, sea and sunbathing, Zagreb has it all.

The Tourist Board said: “We call it the hidden gem of Europe.

“The nearest beach is Opatija - about an- hour-and-a-half way. Also, you could fly into Zagreb - it’s the perfect destination as a city break. You can stay there for three days then travel to Istria and Dalmatia.”

There are trips for travel agents planned throughout the year.
