WTM news: The Bahamas’ big need is tourism

“The greatest gift you can give us after the hurricane is to book your client a holiday to the Bahamas”, said Douglas Trueblood from the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board.

The main message put out by the Bahamas at WTM is to continue to counter the widely publicised misconception that the entirety of the Bahamas Islands has been destroyed by Hurricane Dorian, which simply is not the case.

Douglas continued: “We’re still open for business, there are 700 islands in the Bahamas and only two of them were impacted by the hurricane. Many people ended up cancelling their holidays because they thought all of the islands were in trouble, and that’s when tourism fell. Nassau Paradise Island is one of the islands that was untouched, and we are actually 150 miles away from the area impacted by the hurricane. We’ve gone on a perception tour for several months, talking to the media, we need to change the message – tourism is 80% of our GDP, so we need to rebuild."

In particular, the Nassau Paradise Island has seen recent developments that will undoubtedly boost tourism to the area: “Our cruise terminal has undergone a 250-million-dollar renovation, it is the largest cruise terminal in the Caribbean, and it will be state of the art too. 80% of the country’s business is in Nassau paradise island actually, with attractions including two of the largest casinos, the Atlantis along with other beautiful hotels,” he added.

The Bahamas has much to look forward to in terms of furthering their exposure in the industry as well, including hosting both the Caribbean Market Place (CHTA) at Nassau Paradise Island from January 21-23 and the International Travel Partners Council. The islands see around five to eight FAM trips a year, with agents either coming to the Bahamas or being invited to go on tour with the tourist board.
