WTM news: Palma extends its summer season to all year

Once a summer holiday destination, Palma is growing in popularity with winter city breaks on the rise.

The mayor Jose Hila described the Balearic capital as a hidden gem with strong cultural heritage, new hotels, great restaurants - and temperatures that still reach the mid-20Cs.

He said: ?Before it was the beaches that were being offered and now we have opened out and we have managed to extend the season. Tourism in the winter has already increased.

?We?ve shown that we have beaches and now we have the city as a destination. Also, the hotel industry has hotels in the centre, which makes it very attractive.

Palma is a city of great cultural heritage with amazing gastronomy on offer.?

The growth in winter tourism has been part of the island?s strategy to focus on sustainability and spread holidaymakers throughout the year. As part of this commitment, the tourist board has launched the Palma 365 initiative - working alongside private sector such hoteliers, restaurants and small businesses to offer tourists the opportunity to explore the city?s attractions, while also maintaining a sustainable balance for Palma?s residents.
