WTM news: Malta leads the way for sustainable holidays in 2020

Malta leads the way when it comes to changing and transforming the travel sector to help protect the environment.

The Ministry of Tourism has collaborated with a travel organisation that will help those working in travel and tourism to meet sustainability criteria set by the Paris climate change treaty.

Launching in 2020, the Strong Universal Network has made Valletta the headquarters of its Global Centre for Climate Friendly Tourism.

Sunx welcomes countries, cities, communities and companies to voluntarily file plans to be part of its Paris 1.5-degree Community. This community will be invited to attend an annual Q1 Think Tank event in Malta to reflect, discuss and share opportunities and challenges the travel and tourism sector may encounter up to 2050.

Other initiatives on Malta?s sustainability agenda include installing 130 additional electric car charging points, doubling the number that are currently installed.

Also, 2020 will be the first year that the Earth Garden festival - taking place 30 May to 2 June - will promote zero waste through the use of reusable cups, create zero landfill and energy-saving whilst festival-goers enjoy top-class international music acts.
