UK travel re-opens, ready for summer holidays

As the Brits begin to dust off their suitcases and passports in anticipation, the question seems to be not so much whether to travel but when and to where.

The most recent data from trivago shows British searches for accommodation outside the UK are on the rise, with a spike in European holidays (Malta is leading the charge) as well as a strong interest in Dubai (one of the only non-European destinations).  Domestic searches are still popular, with a focus on beach stays over city breaks.

Some of the major findings were:

- Website search traffic is on the rise for most of trivago?s European platforms between the first week of June and the first week of July. In the UK, the search increase was more than 100% while in comparison, Portugal and Germany only saw a 20% increase in their searches.

- Searches for domestic and international travel from the UK have seen an increase since the beginning of June but are still much lower than this time last year.  In the first week of July 2020, domestic click-outs were at approximately 32% of their level in the same period of 2019, while international click-outs stood close to 27% of the level observed in the same period.

- Most UK click-outs are for accommodation options within a 300 km radius of the searcher?s location (i.e. not that far from home), however, between May and June 2020 this radius increased to 500 km as people look to travel further afield.

- UK seaside destinations saw a strong increase in demand in the last week of June.

- List of most searched cities for Brits includes a combination of domestic and international destinations, with Dubai being the only non-European city to feature. Malta saw a particularly high rate of click-outs, already reaching over half the amount as last year.
