Tunisia plans eco-tourism development for Kerkennah Islands

In its bid to diversify its tourism offerings, the Tunisian tourism minister, Rene Trabelsi has told Travel Bulletin that there are plans in place to develop Kerkennah Islands, a group of four islands located off the east coast of Tunisia. The two main islands are Chergui and Gharbi.

While Tunisia is best known for its popular beach resort holidays, the North African country's tourism industry has been rebuilding, diversifying and improving security since the terror attacks of 2015. Bookings for summer beach holidays for 2019 are strong, with visitor numbers on the rise, and the minister is keen to develop other tourism sectors.

Mr Trabelsi told Travel Bulletin the development planned for Kerkennah will be "ecologically friendly ... it will be unique and sustainable."

The development will only feature "villa-style accommodation, no concrete, no high-rise" and recycling will be a priority. Sfax will be the nearest airport for accessing the islands, followed by a 40-minute boat ride.

When asked about preventing overtourism to the site, Mr Trabelsi said, "it cannot happen as there will not be enough beds for that - capacity is limited". He added that it will be an "a la carte" experience for guests.

"The development will be all about sustainability of the environment and protection of species - it will be something unique," Mr Trabelsi told Travel Bulletin.

The islands have a warm, dry climate with prevailing sea breezes, and it has a small local population, although some wealthy individuals have purchased second homes there.
