Sandos & Marconfort goes eco-friendly and says ?no? to plastic

Sandos & Marconfort are helping to protect the environment by achieving their goal to eliminate 12.4 million items of plastic waste per year.

A recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports quantified the expansion of a floating garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean, between California and Hawaii, which is four to sixteen times larger than previously thought. It occupies an area about four times the size of California and is estimated to contain 1.8 billion pieces of rubbish. The main problem of plastics is that, bit by bit, they are fragmented to reduce their size. This fragmentation causes the larger plastic items to become microplastics, which are ingested by fish, seabirds, cetaceans, causing health problems for marine life and entering our food chain.

The hotel group has made a decision to replace all plastics that they use in hotels with biodegradable materials or recycled cardboard.

The new policy will mean the elimination of the following at all Sandos & Marconfort hotels: 1.8 million straws, using biodegradable straws as an alternative at the request of guests; 1.4 million plastic cutlery, replacing it with stainless steel cutlery or biodegradable cutlery for special activities; 750,000 plastic plates that will be replaced by biodegradable plates; and 8.5 million plastic cups that will be replaced by recycled cardboard cups.

The hotel chain revealed that special bins will be provided for recycling of the cardboard cups and part of this consumption will be replaced by reusable polycarbonate cups. In addition to this, 484,500 units of amenities made of plastic will be replaced by biodegradable material.

Taking into account the above figures, this is a reduction of approximately 12.4 million plastic items across their hotels.

Sandos & Marconfort run hotels and resorts across Spain, including Lanzarote, Malaga, Torremolinos and Benidorm, with a focus on all-inclusive packages for families, couples and groups of friends.
