Avenue of Stars reopens in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars has reopened following three years of renovations.

The redesigned urban space allows visitors to experience Hong Kong’s busiest and most exciting cultural waterfront, as well as learn about local celebrities who have contributed to the city’s film and television industry through digital technology.

The 457 metre-long promenade first opened in 1982, and in 2004, it was modelled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Displayed on wooden handrails along the promenade are 117 hand prints by some of Hong Kong’s leading actors and actresses, as well as four statues depicting Anita Mui, Bruce Lee, a replica of the Hong Kong Film Awards statuette, and McDull.

Visitors are now able to scan QR codes on the hand prints and four statues to access the artists’ biographies and clips from their films. They can also take photos with the statues which come to life using augmented reality technology.

The space has been designed by James Corner Field Operations.

The new features include a new paving, extensive greenery, generous shade and seating, and an accessible undulating sculptural edge.

Speirs & Major’s created the lighting along the promenade. A special lighting system is also concealed inside the cladding, which illuminates the water flowing beneath the pedestrian deck after dark.

Inspired by its market stalls, Harbour Kiosk, designed by LAAB, automatically transforms its “gate” into an “awning” during the day and returns to its compact shape at night. The overhead solar panels of the seven Mobile Carts provide electricity to support their activities

Avenue of Stars has also been designed to embrace sustainability principles. It is the first outdoor space in China to receive SITES Gold accreditation.
