ANTOR?s plea to Boris Johnson for lifting compulsory quarantine

The Association of National Tourist Offices and Representatives (ANTOR) has written to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as the Secretaries of State for Culture, Media and Sport, the FCO and Transport, on behalf of its overseas destination tourism office representatives and members, to lift the compulsory quarantine for low-risk countries and establish International Travel Corridors (?air bridges?) between the UK, and low-risk countries, by the end of the review period, which ends on June 28

The request has been made to support the travel and tourism industry, which represents 4 million jobs in the UK and 11% of the country?s total workforce. The tourism sector contributed ?200 billion to the GDP (WTTC) last year.

To effectively manage and deal with the risk of contamination, the status of the pandemic in the partner country and the public health measures implemented, and at the border must be assessed, according to ANTOR. Before inbound and outbound tourism restarts, it is essential to gauge how the safety measures in other countries work with those implemented in the UK, the organisation urged.

ANTOR pointed out that among the 60 partner countries, 24 have had less than 125 deaths from COVID-19, 38 countries had less than 1,000 deaths and 52 had less than 10,000 deaths. There are only six ANTOR member destinations which have a higher number of cases per capita than the UK.

Implementation of selective quarantine applicable only to high risk zones and lifting compulsory quarantine measures for low risk countries; with some acceptable preventative measures in place; will allow British tourists to travel and the tourism sector to grow, the ANTOR statement said, while also noting that many leading travel companies have included COVID-19 in their travel insurance policies.
