WTM UPDATE: Abu Dhabi on a mission to become the cultural hub of the UAE

At the 2018 edition of the World Travel Market, the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism highlighted the development of culture within the city as a way to set itself apart from the other emirates.

Qasr Al Hosn, Abu Dhabi's oldest fort, has seen a huge renovation project take place as well as the opening of a visitor centre and event spaces within the development.

Commenting on the new opening Anthony Earl Rippingale, acting director of Travel Trade and Market Development at DCT Abu Dhabi told Travel Bulletin, "We are announcing the opening of one of our newest cultural institutions Qasr Al Hosn which has been years in the working and is a beautiful compliment to the louvre Abu Dhabi and I think we are just continuing to build on our strength as a cultural destination. This differentiates us from the competition from other the cities in the UAE. That is probably one of the biggest most exciting pieces.

As visitor numbers to the city increase, there have also been a number of new hotel openings, with the arrival of Jumeirah, Rotana, Rixos, W Hotel, Fairmont and The Edition. On the global stage, Abu Dhabi is quickly on it's way to becoming known as a festival city, hosting a number of exciting events throughout the year.

"In terms if events, Abu Dhabi is really becoming a festival city. There's programming throughout the year. F1 is becoming bigger and better than ever. We have a special Olympics in March next year so there is a lot of excitement around that. I think that is really testimony to Abu Dhabi's pillar being a tolerant society -so we're really excited about the special Olympics. Not because it's a big tourism driver but because of the global exposure we get for it and some of the legacy pieces it will leave behind."

Rippingale also highlighted an upcoming event, that is set to attract visitors who love art and culture. He added: "It's the 10 year anniversary for Abu Dhabi Art which kicks off 15 November and Classic Season will be announced which ties in with our arts and culture events calendar. Abu Dhabi Classics is bringing world class musical talent from around the world."
